It installs into a dedicated control or switch-fabric slot in the chassis, providing internal switching fabric and/or management functions and is typically deployed with redundancy across a chassis (1:1 management, N+1 fabric). Replacing or adding a unit of this kind is used to restore redundancy or replace a failed board without a full chassis swap.
