AUI was the original 10Mbps Ethernet interconnect standard, used before autosensing 10/100 RJ-45 ports became universal, and modules such as this let older 3Com concentrator chassis connect to external transceivers for coax, fibre or twisted-pair segments depending on which transceiver was attached.
