The Nortel NTFN48EA is a four-port E1 Next Generation Function Processor for the Passport 6400/7400 wide-area switching platform, provisioned with the Frame Relay application software load. It terminates four E1 (2.048Mbit/s) trunks and hands them off to the Passport shelf’s switching fabric running Frame Relay processing, making it one of the interface cards that let a Passport 6400/7400 chassis carry Frame Relay traffic over E1 circuits alongside the platform’s ATM and IP switching functions. The ‘Next Generation’ designation in Nortel’s own naming distinguishes this function-processor generation from the earlier NTBP/NTFP-family E1 processors used on the same chassis range, offering higher port density and updated firmware within the same physical function-processor slot format. Passport 6400/7400 nodes were widely deployed by carriers and large enterprises for multiservice WAN aggregation through the 2000s, and many of those nodes remain in service handling legacy Frame Relay circuits that have not yet migrated to Ethernet or MPLS.
