The Brocade HD-7800F-0001 is a Brocade 7800 Fibre Channel SAN Extension Switch, a 16-port 8Gb switch purpose-built for extending Fibre Channel fabrics over distance using FCIP (Fibre Channel over IP). It combines native 8Gb Fibre Channel switching with dedicated FCIP extension ports, allowing SAN traffic such as replication and remote backup to be carried efficiently over standard IP wide-area network links between data centres. This makes the 7800 a common choice for disaster-recovery and business-continuity architectures, where storage arrays at geographically separated sites need synchronous or asynchronous replication without requiring dedicated dark fibre. Built-in compression and advanced FCIP tunnelling help maximise the effective bandwidth available on WAN links, while integrated Fibre Channel switching means the unit can serve as both an edge SAN switch and an extension gateway in a single chassis, reducing the equipment footprint compared with separate switch-plus-extension-appliance designs.
