The Ciena (ONI) NXPEMAAA is a Processor Element Module for the Online Metro platform, the control-plane card responsible for shelf management, configuration and communication with the network management system on an Online Metro shelf.

As the processing element of the shelf, it handles the software that runs the node, coordinating the optical line and client cards fitted around it and reporting status and alarms upstream. Replacing a faulty processor element restores control of the shelf without needing to touch the optical traffic cards.
