The IBM 15R7516 is a 16-port ESCON channel card (QZ2S, level 42) for the IBM 2064 zSeries z900 mainframe. ESCON, IBM’s Enterprise Systems Connection protocol, provides the fibre-optic channel connectivity between the mainframe and its attached storage and peripheral controllers; these “sweep” cards are always installed in pairs, and while the card carries 16 physical ports, IBM’s own documentation reserves one as a spare so effectively 15 are available for live connections.
