The IBM 45D8606 is the IBM 2323 zSeries 16-port ESCON Channel Module, CCIN QZ2S, feature code FC2323, providing ESCON channel connectivity for older System z and zSeries mainframes using MT-RJ fibre connectors. It replaced the earlier 4-port ESCON channel cards (feature code 2313 on the z900 generation) as mainframes were upgraded, consolidating more ESCON ports onto a single channel card as ESCON connectivity requirements were rationalised over time. ESCON remains in limited use today mainly to attach legacy peripherals that have not migrated to FICON, and a genuine spare 16-port card is a routine requirement for maintaining that legacy connectivity.
