The IBM 46K8073 is a U320 4-pack SCSI disk drive backplane, associated with IBM feature #6574, a disk feature controller that enables a second set of four disk unit slots in a system unit to be used, with drives plugged into the #6574 controlled by the system’s integrated base disk controller. The backplane provides the physical connectivity for that second four-slot disk group, letting a system expand its internal disk capacity without adding a separate PCI RAID controller. iSeries and Power systems fitted with #6574-based disk expansion remain in service across a number of established midrange deployments, and a genuine, correctly matched backplane is required to restore or expand internal disk capacity after a backplane fault.
