The IBM 53P3472 is the I/O backplane (system board) for the IBM 7311-D20 I/O and DASD expansion drawer, providing the seven hot-swap PCI-X slots and connectivity for up to twelve hot-swap disk drive bays inside the drawer. The 7311-D20 attaches to a pSeries system unit over the RIO or RIO-2 loop to extend its available I/O slots and disk capacity beyond what the base system provides, and the backplane fitted inside it is the board every adapter and disk in the drawer physically connects to, so a fault here can take the whole drawer’s I/O and storage offline. 7311-D20 drawers remain in service across a number of established pSeries deployments, and a genuine, correctly matched backplane is required to restore a drawer to service after a backplane fault.
