IBM 53P5243 is a genuine IBM “RIO to RIO-2 Remote” adapter, feature #3165. IBM’s Remote I/O (RIO) and its successor RIO-2 are the proprietary loop interconnects pSeries and iSeries Power servers use to link a system unit’s central electronics complex to external I/O and DASD expansion drawers. A bridge or remote adapter of this kind lets a system fitted with the earlier RIO loop connect to RIO-2-based expansion towers, or vice versa, extending the useful life of existing expansion hardware when upgrading the base system.
