NEC X6717A FOTS / FD-1840 optical transmission system Telecom System Card / Module

The NEC X6717A is an alarm control unit for the FD-1840A, the high speed 48 V variant. It performs the same class of job as the low speed unit, collecting fault and status information from the shelf and presenting it to the site alarm and management systems, but it is built for the high speed side of the equipment and for a 48 V supply. Both variants exist in the same shelves and the marking on the unit is what tells them apart.

NEC’s FOTS range, short for Fiber Optic Transmission System, was the company’s optical line equipment for carrier and utility networks, deployed heavily in North America alongside the FD series digital radio and multiplex products. A terminal is built from multiplexer and demultiplexer units, channel units for the tributary rates carried, alarm control units and power supplies, all mounted in a common shelf. The X-prefixed codes identify those individual plug-in units.
