NEC X6716A: FD-1840A low speed alarm control unit for NEC transmission equipment.

The NEC X6716A is the low speed alarm control unit for the FD-1840A. Alarm control units gather fault and status information from the units in a shelf and present it to the site alarm system and to the remote management path, which is what allows an unstaffed transmission site to be monitored at all. Low speed and high speed variants of the unit exist and are not interchangeable.

FOTS and the associated FD equipment are NEC transmission products from the era when optical line systems were assembled from discrete plug-in units rather than integrated cards. Multiplexers, demultiplexers, DS3 channel units, alarm control units and their power supplies each carry their own X code, and units are matched to the shelf generation they were built for. NEC has not supported this generation for many years, so spares come from held stock.
