The PCI expansion slots let a site add WAN interface cards directly into the appliance, extending it beyond the fixed-configuration smaller Contivity models. It terminates IPsec VPN connections back to a head-office gateway or a mesh of peer Contivity units, and was deployed by mid-size and larger enterprises needing higher tunnel counts than the 1600/1700 models support.
