The Nortel NTFN49GA is an eight-port V.11 Next Generation Premium function processor for the Passport 6400/7400 wide-area switching platform. V.11 is the balanced differential-signalling variant of the X.21/V.11 synchronous serial interface family, commonly used for higher-speed leased-line and inter-node connections, and this card terminates eight such circuits per slot into the Passport shelf’s switching fabric. The ‘Premium’ designation in Nortel’s own naming marks it out from the standard-tier V.11 function processors on the same chassis range, typically indicating additional protocol or performance features supported in firmware rather than a change to the physical interface itself. It belongs to the same NTFN49-prefix family as the standard 8-port V.11 cards used elsewhere on Passport 6400/7400 nodes. These chassis remain in service in a number of legacy carrier and enterprise WAN cores still carrying serial leased-line traffic.
