The Ortel System 8000 is a 2:1 fibre-optic RF transmitter system covering the 3.6-4.2GHz C-band downlink range, used to carry satellite RF signals over optical fibre between an antenna site and a remote equipment room. RF-over-fibre systems of this type convert the received C-band signal to an optical carrier for low-loss, long-distance transmission over single-mode fibre, avoiding the signal degradation and cost of long coaxial cable runs, and the 2:1 configuration provides input redundancy or combining for two RF sources feeding a single fibre link. Ortel (later part of Emcore) was a leading supplier of RF-over-fibre transmitter and receiver systems for satellite teleports, broadcast facilities and cable/CATV headends.
