The Ortel System 8002 is a 2:1 fibre-optic RF transmitter system covering the 5.8-6.5GHz extended C-band uplink range, converting satellite RF signals to an optical carrier for transmission over single-mode fibre between the antenna site and a remote equipment room. As with other Ortel fibre transmitter systems, it avoids the attenuation and cost penalties of long coaxial cable runs on large or remote teleport sites, and the 2:1 configuration provides input redundancy or combining for two RF sources onto a single fibre link. The 5.8-6.5GHz coverage suits extended C-band uplink applications alongside standard C-band and Ku-band ground station equipment. Ortel (later part of Emcore) was a recognised supplier of RF-over-fibre systems for the satellite and broadcast industry, with the System 8002 pairing with a matching receiver such as the System 8003.
