The Sonus MTA20 is a system timing adapter presenting 120 ohm E1 connections for the Sonus GSX9000 media gateway. Timing adapters feed the chassis its external synchronisation reference, which a gateway carrying TDM trunks needs in order to stay in step with the networks it interconnects. The 120 ohm variant matches balanced E1 cabling rather than the 75 ohm coaxial form.

The GSX9000 is a 16-slot media gateway chassis: two slots carry redundant management network servers and the remaining fourteen take circuit or packet network server modules, each paired with a rear-panel adapter that presents the physical interfaces. Sonus merged with GENBAND in 2017 to form Ribbon Communications.
