The IBM 31P0853 is a device adapter for IBM’s enterprise DS8000 storage family, closely related to the device adapter 31P1070 in the same range. Device adapters sit on the back end of the DS8000 controller, driving the connections out to the disk enclosures and running RAID processing, and are fitted in matched pairs so every enclosure keeps two independent paths to the controller.
