The IBM 42C1831 is a QLogic 2-port 10Gb Converged Network Adapter (CFFh), built for IBM BladeCenter H and HT chassis. The card is a Combo Form Factor horizontal (CFFh) expansion daughter card connecting to the blade’s system board over PCIe x8, combining the function of a network interface card and an 8Gb Fibre Channel host bus adapter on a single Converged Enhanced Ethernet (CEE) link, so a blade server can carry both storage and network traffic over one physical connection rather than needing separate cards for each. It uses the IEEE XAUI interface and supports 10Gbps per port, with priority-based flow control, Enhanced Transmission Selection and Data Center Bridging Capability Exchange (DCBX) for converged-network traffic management. Consolidating storage and network connectivity onto one adapter reduces the switch-module and cabling footprint a BladeCenter chassis needs, remaining a common upgrade path for chassis still running mixed Fibre Channel and Ethernet infrastructure.
