The IBM 53P6023 is a PCI I/O backplane for the IBM 5094 PCI expansion tower, CCIN 28B7, providing the PCI slot connectivity inside a 5094 drawer attached to an AS/400 or iSeries system unit. The 5094 tower expands a base system’s available PCI slot count for additional disk, network and communications adapters when the system unit’s own slots are full, and the backplane fitted inside it is the board every adapter in that tower physically plugs into; a fault on the backplane can take an entire tower’s worth of adapters offline rather than a single card. AS/400 and iSeries installations using 5094 expansion towers remain in service across a number of established midrange environments, and a genuine, correctly matched backplane is required to restore a tower to service after a backplane fault.
