The IBM 74Y5457 is a processor voltage regulator module (VRM), CCIN 2BE8, the power regulation card fitted to IBM’s POWER7 8231-E2B server. It sits on the processor card and converts the system’s main DC rail down to the tightly regulated low voltage the POWER7 chip itself requires, a function distinct from the system’s main AC/DC power supplies.

A failed VRM can prevent an otherwise healthy processor module from powering up correctly, so a spare VRM is a routine requirement for restoring a processor card to full operation after a regulator fault.
