The IBM 80P6983 is a dual serial (2-port DB9) PCI adapter for RS/6000 and pSeries systems, adding two additional RS-232 serial ports beyond the system’s built-in native ports. It is used to attach serial consoles, uninterruptible power supply monitoring cables, legacy serial terminals or other RS-232 peripherals where a system’s onboard serial ports are already committed or where additional ports are needed for a specific application.

RS/6000 and pSeries deployments of this generation remain in service in a number of legacy Unix and AIX environments, and a genuine serial adapter is a routine requirement for restoring console or peripheral connectivity after a card failure, or for adding capacity to an existing system.
