The Ortel System 8001 is a 2:1 fibre-optic RF receiver system covering the 3.6-4.2GHz C-band downlink range, converting an optical RF-over-fibre signal back to coaxial RF for delivery to a satellite downconverter or demodulator. It is designed to pair with a matching Ortel fibre transmitter such as the System 8000, forming a complete optical link that carries C-band satellite signals from an antenna site over single-mode fibre to a remote equipment room, avoiding the loss and cost penalties of long coaxial runs, with the 2:1 configuration providing input redundancy or dual-source handling. Ortel (later part of Emcore) built a range of RF-over-fibre transmitter and receiver systems widely used in satellite teleports, broadcast uplink facilities and CATV headend distribution.
