NEC X1831A: FOTS demultiplexer unit, the counterpart to the multiplexer at the receiving end of the span.

The NEC X1831A is a demultiplexer unit from the FOTS optical transmission range, designated FOTS-DMXR, with line and path markings. It is the receiving counterpart of the multiplexer unit: it takes the aggregate signal arriving on the fibre and separates it back into the individual tributary channels for the channel units behind it. A terminal needs both, and they are normally held as a matched pair of spares.

FOTS and the associated FD equipment are NEC transmission products from the era when optical line systems were assembled from discrete plug-in units rather than integrated cards. Multiplexers, demultiplexers, DS3 channel units, alarm control units and their power supplies each carry their own X code, and units are matched to the shelf generation they were built for. NEC has not supported this generation for many years, so spares come from held stock.
