The Cisco NM-1A-OC3SMI is a single-port ATM OC-3 network module with a single-mode intermediate-reach fibre interface, fitted to Cisco’s modular access/aggregation routers such as the 2600, 3600, 3700 and 7200 series. It provides a 155Mbit/s ATM uplink over single-mode fibre.

The intermediate-reach optical specification suits longer campus or inter-building links than a short-reach multimode module could support, without needing the higher-cost long-reach optics intended for carrier-distance runs. ATM OC-3 uplinks of this kind were a common WAN and backbone connection method before Ethernet-based WAN services became dominant, and some legacy ATM-connected router estates remain in service.
