The Cisco AIR-PWR-5500-AC= is a redundant, hot-swappable AC power supply built for the Cisco 5500 Series Wireless LAN Controller (WLC). The 5508 and related 5500 Series controllers accept a second power supply of this type purely for redundancy, since the base unit ships fully functional on one supply, and adding the second lets the controller keep managing its access points through a single supply failure without an outage. This matters more on a WLC than on many other network appliances, because every access point registered to the controller depends on it for configuration, RF management and, in centralised deployments, client traffic forwarding, so controller downtime has a wide blast radius across the wireless network. The 5500 Series has been superseded by later Catalyst/Cisco wireless controller generations but remains active in a number of established enterprise wireless deployments.
