The Cisco MEM-GRP-512 is a 512MB route memory kit, supplied as two 256MB modules, for the GRP-B (Gigabit Route Processor, revision B) fitted to the Cisco 12000 series GSR router. The GRP is the route-processing engine responsible for running the routing protocols and building the forwarding tables that the GSR’s line cards then use for high-speed packet forwarding.

Increasing its onboard memory extends how large a routing table and how many concurrent protocol sessions the processor can support, which matters as internet and carrier routing tables have grown well beyond what earlier memory configurations were designed for. Because the kit is matched specifically to the GRP-B revision, it is not interchangeable with memory specified for the original GRP or later route processor generations. Cisco 12000-series GSR routers remain in service on established service-provider core networks.
