The HP J8707A is a 4-port 10-Gigabit Ethernet module using the X2 optical form factor, built for HP’s ProCurve Switch 5400zl chassis series to provide high-speed uplink or interconnect capacity from a populated 5400zl chassis. X2 is an earlier 10-Gigabit optical module standard than the SFP+ optics used in HP’s later zl 10GbE modules (such as the J9008A 2-port SFP+ card), so this module takes X2-format transceivers (LR, SR, LRM and similar) rather than the smaller SFP+ optics, and the two formats are not interchangeable. It occupies one module bay in a 5400zl chassis alongside whatever access-layer or other uplink modules are fitted. As 5400zl deployments built during the X2 era remain in service, a spare module of this kind is a routine requirement for restoring or expanding 10-Gigabit uplink capacity.
