The Juniper MCS-M160-S is the Miscellaneous Control Subsystem (MCS) board used in Juniper M160 and M40e routers. The MCS works with its paired Routing Engine as a host module: it collects sensor readings from the chassis, passes alarms and control messages between the Routing Engine and the router components, and generates the SONET/SDH clock signal for the interfaces. Each MCS needs the Routing Engine next to it, MCS0 with RE0 and MCS1 with RE1. A chassis can hold two, one master and one backup that takes over if the master fails or is removed. Because the MCS sits in the control path for the whole chassis, keeping a spare is common practice. Tech-Star (UK-based, shipped worldwide) stocks Juniper control boards and interface cards for M-series routers. Get in touch to confirm the chassis before ordering.
