The Juniper MCS-S is a Miscellaneous Control Subsystem (MCS) board for Juniper M160 and M40e routers. Together with a Routing Engine it forms the host module: the Routing Engine builds the routing tables and manages the system, while the MCS monitors the chassis sensors, relays control messages to the router components and provides the SONET/SDH clock. When two host modules are fitted one runs as master and the other as backup, and the backup takes over automatically if the master fails or is removed. A fault on this board affects the whole chassis rather than a single port, so a spare is a sensible precaution for routers still in production. Tech-Star (UK-based, shipped worldwide) stocks Juniper control boards and interface cards for M-series routers. Get in touch to confirm the chassis before ordering.
