E3 was the standard high-capacity trunk speed for aggregation links and inter-node connections on carrier and large-enterprise Passport deployments, sitting above the more common E1 tributary interfaces in the platform’s bandwidth hierarchy, and this three-port density let a single function-processor slot carry a substantial amount of aggregated traffic rather than dedicating a full card to a single E3 circuit. It belongs to the NTJS-prefix family of Passport 6400/7400 function processors and interface panels, alongside sibling cards built for other port counts and protocols on the same chassis range. Passport 6400/7400 nodes remain in service in a number of long-running carrier cores handling legacy ATM, Frame Relay and leased-line traffic that predates the wider move to Ethernet and MPLS aggregation.
