The IBM 39Y8940 is a genuine IBM DPI (Distributed Power Interconnect) 60A/250V front-end Power Distribution Unit, a 9.36kVA, 1U rack-mount PDU with an IEC309 2P+ground plug and three IEC 309-C19 outlets, designed for System x and BladeCenter environments. It functions as a line-cord consolidator: a single high-current 60A/250V feed enters the unit and is distributed out to downstream rack PDUs as manageable branch circuits, reducing the number of individual high-current feeds a data centre needs to run to a rack. The half-rack-width, 1U form factor lets it mount alongside standard rack PDU hardware without consuming a full rack unit of its own. This class of DPI PDU remains a standard building block in BladeCenter and System x rack deployments still running in production, particularly where the original power infrastructure design is being preserved rather than rebuilt.
