The IBM 00LP860 is a bulk power regulator, listed with us as BPR-ED. In IBM’s large frames the incoming mains supply is converted and regulated in one place, the bulk power enclosure, before being distributed to the rest of the machine. The BPRs are the regulator modules in that enclosure, installed in numbers that suit the frame’s load and configured with redundancy so the machine keeps running through a module failure. Fit depends on the machine type and on how many regulators the frame is populated for.

System z mainframes and the largest Power servers are still running production workloads in banking, insurance, government and manufacturing. IBM designed them to be serviced part by part, with hot pluggable power, cooling and I/O units held in redundant configurations so that a single failure is a scheduled repair rather than an outage.
