The IBM 97P6887 is a 4.7GB IDE DVD multi-drive with CD-RW recording, the SW-9584-C mechanism, closely paired with the near-identical 97P6888. It is also known internally as the Wichita 2 RAM IDE Drive.

Drives of this generation were fitted as the removable-media bay option in IBM tower and rack servers of the period, used for OS installation media and local backup rather than for primary data storage, and they are a genuine wear item that fails independently of the rest of the server.
