It carries six PCI-X slots and provides the physical connection point between the system’s processor drawer and its I/O adapters, so a fault here can take an entire bank of PCI-X slots offline until the board is replaced. The 9117-570 is a rack-mounted, modular RISC System/6000-derived server built to be expanded drawer by drawer, and the I/O backplane is one of the field replaceable units engineers swap directly.
