The IBM 98Y3863 is a four-port 4Gb Fibre Channel host adapter card for the DS8000 storage system, shortwave, supplied under feature code 3113. Host adapters are the storage system’s side of the SAN: they present the volumes to the attached servers, as distinct from the device adapters that connect the controllers to the drive enclosures. A DS8000 is configured with several host adapters spread across its enclosures so that the loss of one card, or of the fabric it faces, removes paths rather than access.
