The Cisco WS-X5006 is a Catalyst 5000 Supervisor Engine I module fitted with two 100Base-FX ports over multimode fibre, providing the switch’s management, forwarding-control and uplink function in a Catalyst 5002 chassis. It runs on a 25MHz Motorola MC68EC040 processor with 20MB of default DRAM and 4MB of default flash, and includes a DB-25 console port for local management, supporting up to 1024 VLANs across the switch. As the entry-level Supervisor for the Catalyst 5000 family, it was superseded by later Supervisor Engine II and III modules offering higher switching capacity, but remains the correct spare for chassis still running Supervisor I hardware. Catalyst 5000 switches of this generation remain in service in a number of established legacy networks, and a genuine spare such as this restores a chassis to operation after a supervisor failure.
