The Cisco CX-SSP is a Silicon Switch Processor (SSP) module for the Cisco 7000 series router family, comprising the 7000 and 7010 chassis. The SSP works alongside the Route Processor (RP) over the Cisco Extended Bus (CxBus), taking over the packet-switching decision and forwarding role so the Route Processor is free to handle routing protocol processing and system management.

One SSP (or equivalent SP) is required in every Cisco 7000/7010 chassis for the router to forward traffic at all, making it a core, non-optional component rather than an optional accessory. Cisco 7000-series routers are long-retired but some remain in service in legacy or lab environments, and a working SSP is the standard way to restore a chassis that has lost its switching processor.
