The Cisco MEM-C4K-256-SDRAM is a 256MB SDRAM memory module built for the supervisor engine in the Catalyst 4000 and 4500 Series switch chassis. The supervisor engine handles the switch’s control-plane functions, including routing protocols, VLAN and spanning-tree processing and system management, and its available DRAM sets a practical ceiling on the size of the routing and MAC address tables it can hold along with the software feature set it can run; a memory upgrade of this kind was a common way to extend the working life of an existing supervisor rather than replacing the whole module. It is specific to the SDRAM-era Catalyst 4000/4500 supervisor generation rather than the later DDR-based supervisors used on more recent 4500-X and 4500-E chassis. Catalyst 4000/4500 switches of this generation remain in service in some legacy campus deployments.
