The Cisco NM-2FE-2W is a network module carrying two Fast Ethernet ports and two WAN interface card slots. The second Ethernet port is what separates it from the single port version: it lets one router present two separate LAN segments, or a LAN and a DMZ, without adding a switch. The two WIC slots take the usual single-wide wide area cards, so a single module can cover both the local and the wide area side of a branch installation.

Cisco’s modular access routers, the 2600, 3600 and 3700 series and their successors, take network modules in the large slots and WAN interface cards in the smaller ones. That split let one chassis be configured for almost any access requirement: Ethernet handoff, leased line, ISDN, DSL, dial or content caching, changed later by swapping a card rather than the router. Enormous numbers were installed, and the modules still turn up as spares for networks that have not been refreshed.
