The Cisco NM-1FE-1CE1-B/U is a network module carrying one Fast Ethernet port and one channelised E1 port on a single card. The B/U in the code means the E1 side supports both balanced 120 ohm and unbalanced 75 ohm presentation, so the same module suits an RJ-48 or a coaxial handoff. Channelised working lets the 2 Mbit/s circuit be split into individual 64 kbit/s timeslots and allocated to different destinations, which is what a branch router needed when voice and data shared one line.

Cisco’s modular access routers, the 2600, 3600 and 3700 series and their successors, take network modules in the large slots and WAN interface cards in the smaller ones. That split let one chassis be configured for almost any access requirement: Ethernet handoff, leased line, ISDN, DSL, dial or content caching, changed later by swapping a card rather than the router. Enormous numbers were installed, and the modules still turn up as spares for networks that have not been refreshed.
