Cisco WIC-2AM-V2 enterprise networking (router/Catalyst switch/UCS families) Router Line Card

The Cisco WIC-2AM-V2 is a two port analogue modem WAN interface card in the version 2 build. It puts two V.92 class modems inside the router, connected to ordinary analogue lines, and was used for dial backup, out of band management access and low volume remote sites. Having the modems on the router rather than on a separate device meant the backup path came up under the router’s own control, which is the whole point of the card.

The network module and WAN interface card system was Cisco’s answer to branch office variety. A 2600, 3600, 3700 or later chassis provides slots, and the modules decide what the router actually terminates, whether that is Ethernet, ISDN, serial, DSL or an on-board service. Because the same card fits several chassis generations, these parts stayed useful long after the routers they were bought for, and they remain a routine maintenance item.
