The Cisco WIC-1SHDSL V2 is a single port G.SHDSL WAN interface card in its version 2 build. G.SHDSL gives symmetric bandwidth over a copper pair, which is what made it the business grade alternative to ADSL where upstream capacity mattered as much as downstream. The card terminates the line on the router itself, removing the separate modem, and the V2 build extended support to later router platforms than the original card covered.

Cisco’s modular access routers, the 2600, 3600 and 3700 series and their successors, take network modules in the large slots and WAN interface cards in the smaller ones. That split let one chassis be configured for almost any access requirement: Ethernet handoff, leased line, ISDN, DSL, dial or content caching, changed later by swapping a card rather than the router. Enormous numbers were installed, and the modules still turn up as spares for networks that have not been refreshed.
