Cisco WIC-1B S/T enterprise networking (router/Catalyst switch/UCS families) Router Line Card

The Cisco WIC-1B S/T is a single port ISDN basic rate WAN interface card with an S/T interface. It fits the WIC slot on 1600, 1700, 2600, 3600 and 3700 series routers and gives the router one ISDN BRI circuit, connected through an NT1 rather than directly to the line. Its usual jobs were dial backup for a leased line, low volume branch connectivity and on demand links that were cheaper to dial than to lease.

Cisco’s modular access routers, the 2600, 3600 and 3700 series and their successors, take network modules in the large slots and WAN interface cards in the smaller ones. That split let one chassis be configured for almost any access requirement: Ethernet handoff, leased line, ISDN, DSL, dial or content caching, changed later by swapping a card rather than the router. Enormous numbers were installed, and the modules still turn up as spares for networks that have not been refreshed.
