The Nortel NTFK01GC is a four-port E1C (Channelised E1) function processor for the Passport 6400/7400 wide-area switching platform, distinct from the plain E1 cards on the same chassis in that it processes the E1 circuit’s individual timeslots as separately-switched channels rather than treating the trunk as a single unstructured tributary. This channelised handling is used where a Passport node needs to switch or route traffic at the individual DS0/timeslot level within an E1 trunk, rather than passing the whole trunk through as one logical circuit, a common requirement for mixed voice/data tributaries or for interconnecting with channelised carrier equipment. It belongs to the NTFK-prefix family of Passport function processors, built specifically for channelised E1 handling as opposed to the NTFN/NTNQ-prefix cards used for unstructured E1/E3/serial interfaces on the same platform.
