The Nortel NTJS02CA is a dual-port 100Base-T Ethernet function processor for the Passport 6400/7400 wide-area switching platform, giving the node two Fast Ethernet interfaces per card slot for terminating Ethernet-based traffic alongside the platform’s more traditional serial, E1 and E3 WAN interfaces. As Ethernet displaced serial leased lines and Frame Relay as the dominant access technology through the 2000s, Nortel added Ethernet-terminating function processors like this one to the Passport range so existing chassis could take on Ethernet handoffs without a full platform replacement, sitting alongside the NTJS-prefix family’s other interface and termination-panel parts on the same chassis. It belongs to the interface class of Passport cards rather than the higher-capacity trunk cards (E1/E3/V.11), being aimed at Ethernet access and aggregation ports rather than core switching capacity. Passport nodes fitted with Ethernet interface cards of this kind remain in service on networks that added Ethernet access without retiring the underlying WAN switching platform.
