The Cisco HWIC-4ESW is a 4-port 10/100 Ethernet switch interface card in Cisco’s High-Speed WAN Interface Card (HWIC) form factor. It fits the HWIC slots on Integrated Services Router platforms (1800, 2800, 2900, 3800 and 3900 series), adding a small managed Layer 2 switch directly into the router chassis rather than requiring a separate external switch. This is a common way to extend a branch router’s local port count for desktop or IP-phone connectivity without adding a standalone switch to the rack, and remains a routine spare on ISR deployments still in active service.
