The Cisco PRP-2 is the second-generation Performance Route Processor for the Cisco 12000 series (GSR) core routers, providing the routing control-plane and route processing capacity for a 12000-series chassis. As the PRP handles route computation and system management for the whole chassis, it is a critical component rather than a peripheral module, and PRP-2 offers higher route-table capacity and processing performance than the original PRP.

12000-series GSR routers were widely deployed by service providers and large enterprises as core and edge routing platforms, and while newer core routing platforms have largely superseded new deployments, GSR chassis remain in service on some long-lived networks, making a genuine PRP-2 a routine spare for maintaining or restoring full chassis capability. Confirm chassis compatibility and existing PRP generation before ordering.
