The Cisco NM-CE-BP is a Content Engine network module in the base performance configuration. It runs Cisco’s content caching and delivery software inside a branch router chassis, using its own processor and disk, which was the standard way of putting content services at a remote site before wide area optimisation appliances took over. Disk capacity varies between builds of this module, so it is worth confirming what is fitted to the unit rather than assuming.

The network module and WAN interface card system was Cisco’s answer to branch office variety. A 2600, 3600, 3700 or later chassis provides slots, and the modules decide what the router actually terminates, whether that is Ethernet, ISDN, serial, DSL or an on-board service. Because the same card fits several chassis generations, these parts stayed useful long after the routers they were bought for, and they remain a routine maintenance item.
