The Cisco WS-X5158 is a Catalyst 5000-series ATM LANE (LAN Emulation) module with a dual-PHY interface and two multimode fibre SC ports. It fits the Catalyst 5000 chassis family and bridges classic Ethernet/Token Ring LAN traffic onto an ATM backbone using LAN Emulation, letting an ATM core switch carry conventional LAN VLANs transparently to end stations with no native ATM awareness.

The dual-PHY design and twin SC multimode ports supported redundant or dual-homed fibre connections back to the ATM switch fabric. This class of module belongs to the ATM-to-Ethernet campus backbone designs common in the late 1990s and early 2000s, and while ATM LANE deployments are now a minority of the installed base, some legacy Catalyst 5000 ATM estates remain in service.
